On January 24, 2026, Universal Content Group (HESHU) was invited to attend the Yangpu AI Short Drama Intelligent Creation Symposium and Global Editing Competition forum, hosted by the Yangpu Science and Technology Innovation Promotion Association of Shanghai (Yangpu STIPA) under the guidance of the Yangpu District Culture and Tourism Bureau, the Yangpu District Investment Promotion Office, the Communist Youth League Yangpu District Committee and the Changhai Road Sub-district Office. The company joined representatives of government agencies, industry leaders, platforms, producers and technology service providers—including Agricultural Bank of China Shanghai Yangpu Sub-branch, the Shanghai Cultural and Creative Finance Service Platform, Volcano Engine, Tencent Cloud, Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, Dalian University of Technology and Nishang Feiying—to discuss the short-drama content ecosystem, technological innovation and pathways for international business cooperation.
Nicholas M. Xie, General Manager of Universal Content Group, delivered a keynote speech titled “New Infrastructure for Taking Mini-Dramas Global: Synergy among Content, AI and Distribution Systems.” The event also featured the unveiling of the “Yangpu STIPA AI Short Drama Intelligent Creation and Global Expansion Base” and the “Shanghai College Students’ AI Creation Base,” giving the regional AI short-drama industry a dedicated service platform and supporting deeper integration of industry, academia and research.

Dalian University of Technology then signed cooperation agreements with Yangpu-based companies Zhiying Huixin and Nishang Feiying, officially launching a short-drama video lab project focused on technology R&D and content innovation to accelerate the commercialization of industry technologies. To ensure the competition’s professionalism and credibility, a ceremony was held to appoint the judging panel, with industry experts from Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, Changzhou Intelligent Equipment Research Institute, Tencent Cloud, Universal Content Group and other organizations invited to serve as judges. At the ceremony, registration for the AI Short Drama Global Editing Competition officially opened, inviting outstanding creative teams and works from the public.

With the rapid growth of the global short-drama industry, short-drama content has expanded from domestic to overseas markets and from a single distribution model to a diversified monetization system, becoming a major growth engine in global digital entertainment. According to forecasts by established research institutions, the overseas short-drama market is expected to exceed US$3 billion in 2025 and could surpass US$10 billion within the next three years. Rapid growth is expected to continue for years to come as the industry enters a stage of “platform-level competition and symbiotic collaboration.” At the event, Universal Content Group engaged in in-depth discussions on core topics including short-drama globalization strategy, model validation, platform collaboration and industry cooperation mechanisms. Participants reached broad consensus on the following key trends:
Industry Trends: From Content Boom to a Closed-Loop Industry
The global short-drama industry has shifted from fragmented content production to ecosystem-level development. Content formats are evolving from short standalone stories to serialized narratives, while platforms are actively building content supply chains and closed loops for consumption and monetization. For example, TikTok has further consolidated its short-drama ecosystem through its “mini-program short-drama system” and standalone apps, and has systematically set out how short dramas can become a scalable commercial vehicle—a sign that short dramas now command attention across the global content industry.

Platform Ecosystem Transformation: Balancing Globalization and Localization
Participants agreed that future competition in the short-drama industry will no longer center on traffic or any single product, but on building sustainable content production, distribution and monetization systems within the ecosystems of major global platforms. In this process, Chinese short-drama teams going global—drawing on capabilities built up in content production, AI localization and data-driven distribution—are working with international teams to explore cross-cultural storytelling and promote the global circulation of content and deeper audience engagement.
Technology and Business Innovation as Key Enablers
As AI, data engines and platform-level tools mature, the short-drama industry is reshaping production and consumer engagement models. This includes intelligent translation and localization, content testing and optimization mechanisms, and incentive policies and revenue-sharing mechanisms under platform partnerships—creating new room for growth in short-drama business models and fostering a more efficient content–platform ecosystem.
As an industry practitioner, Universal Content Group remains committed to:
• Building verifiable models for taking content global
• Exploring cross-platform and localization collaboration mechanisms
• Strengthening its technology and commercialization capabilities
The company will continue to cooperate openly with all industry stakeholders, deepen its understanding and practice of the global short-drama ecosystem, and leverage its technology and content strengths to promote the healthy development of the short-drama industry and the creation of shared industry value.
About the Short Drama Industry
In recent years, short dramas have become an important form of digital content, forging new connections between big-screen and mobile cultural consumption and continuously unlocking demand for high-frequency, emotionally intense content. At the same time, China’s domestic short-drama industry has built a solid foundation through mature IP supply chains, AI creation tools and distribution mechanisms, giving Chinese short dramas a significant competitive edge worldwide.
